Run of the Dead

zombie run, Run of the Dead

We survived Syracuse’s Run of the Dead yesterday. The obstacles and zombies chasing you made you almost forget that this was also a 5k race! We all started out a bit unsure of ourselves especially as none of us knew what to expect. Just to make it a little more they gave each of us two flags hooked to a belt. The goal was to finish the course with at least one flag.

They let you run/jog/walk a fair distance before the Zombies start hiding behind corners, in bushes, weeds and forest to jump out and scare the living daylights out of you. Not too far in we realized we had to come up with a plan of attack to evade these zombies. One of us would charge the zombie while the rest of us ran around him or her (because girls can be zombies too). Eventually when two of us lost our flags, they were the blockers. We also used some innocent bystanders as bait so we could survive (we did our fair share of helping as well).

The Run of the Dead obstacles were kicka**. There were monkey bars, walls to climb over, muddy hills, hay bale maze to climb through, and water trenches to name just a few.

This was the wall at the end of the course. I amazed myself by climbing over it. The hardest part was climbing up the backside of the wall.

Being chased by zombies was fun. The obstacles were fun. But, to me the best part was hanging out with these girls. We laughed a lot, cried a little, got dirty (well actually soaked) and left with a few battle scars. Can’t wait for the next one!

Syracuse Sports Association, and their staff did an amazing job putting on their 6th Annual Run of the Dead. The run benefited the New York State Wilderness Search and Rescue who were at each obstacle.
